Marlene Goldner Mitchell, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, formerly of Louisville, KY passed away on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at the age of 85. Born in Louisville on August 20, 1931 to George and Lillian (Layer) Goldner, Marlene was the youngest of two daughters.

Developing a passion for education and teaching early in her life, Marlene attended Atherton High School and then the University of Louisville where she received a Bachelors of Arts degree in Elementary Education. It was during this time that she also met the love of her life, Howard "Bud" Mitchell, and they were married on August 22, 1952. After teaching elementary school for a few years, in 1955, Bud and Marlene moved to Japan where Bud, a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Navy, was assigned as Marine dentist. Living in Japan was one of the greatest experiences of Marlene's life and she and Bud created many wonderful memories while abroad. In 1956, Marlene gave birth to her cherished son, Bradley Steven Mitchell. In 1958, she gave birth to their second adored son, David Scott Mitchell.

After earning her Masters Degree in Education Administration, and teaching for several more years, Marlene was honored to be named the first Principal of Watterson Elementary school in Louisville, a position she held for 20 years. Retiring in 1989, Marlene devoted herself fulltime to taking care of her growing family, as a deacon and elder at Harvey Browne Presbyterian Church, and as a member of the Louisville Woman's Club. Bud and Marlene also enjoyed splitting their time between Louisville and Dallas, TX to be near their children and grandchildren. Lovingly known as "Grams" to Steven, Laura, Becca, and Danny, this title was one of her most treasured. Between traveling the world, her deep love and appreciation of art, boating and sailing, and spending time with her family, Marlene Mitchell lived life to the fullest.

Marlene is survived by her husband of more than 64 years, Bud, and by her sons and their wives, Brad and Kathy Mitchell of Dallas, TX, and David and Natalie Mitchell of Arlington, TX. She is also survived by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Steven and Kristin Mitchell (Orlando, FL), Nick, Laura, Olivia, and Benjamin Choffel (Oklahoma City, OK), Dalton and Becca Lovell (Waco, TX), and Danny Mitchell (Arlington, TX). She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Lillian G. Blackwell. Marlene's life and faith touched all who knew her and she will forever be in our hearts.

Visitation will be held on December 1, 2016 from 4:00 - 8:00pm at Arch L. Heady & Son at Westport Village, 7410 Westport Rd. and a Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, December 2, 2016 at Harvey Browne Memorial Presbyterian Church, 311 Browns Ln. at 1:00pm with burial following at Cave Hill Cemetery.
