Dr. Aleyamma B. Chetty, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2016.

She was born Nov. 22, 1927 in Kerala State in India to Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Philip. She studied at the Christian Medical College, Vellore, India, where she was valedictorian of her Medical school class. She then trained under Dr. Sidney Farber in pathology at the Children's hospital in Boston. She returned to India and was a renowned pathologist and Professor and Head of the Department of Pathology in Vellore until her retirement in 1987. She then moved with her husband...

Dr. Aleyamma B. Chetty, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2016.

She was born Nov. 22, 1927 in Kerala State in India to Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Philip. She studied at the Christian Medical College, Vellore, India, where she was valedictorian of her Medical school class. She then trained under Dr. Sidney Farber in pathology at the Children's hospital in Boston. She returned to India and was a renowned pathologist and Professor and Head of the Department of Pathology in Vellore until her retirement in 1987. She then moved with her husband to the United States to be closer to her children and grandchildren.

The eldest of eight, she helped support her family tirelessly all her life. She was generous to a fault, and touched the lives of all she met. She was loved by her colleagues and students alike and was a role model and inspiration to many.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Dr. Bhakta Viziam Chetty, daughter, Dr. Geetha Joseph (Abraham), son, Dr. Pramod Chetty and grandchildren, Nisha Joseph and Deepak Chetty (Adriana), 4 sisters and 1 brother and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Nancy and Charles Balke who were wonderful friends to her, Marcela Wilson, Jessica Blair and Leslie Davis who helped care for her and Dr. Vani Nadar and Dr. Jane Cornett for their excellent care.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 28, 2016 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 10200 Shelbyville Rd. Visitation will be from 2-6 PM on Sunday at Arch L Heady & Son at Westport Village, 7410 Westport Rd.
